The Christian’s Action Guide for Anxiety and Depression
Depression and anxiety are not simply spiritual failures or a lack of faith; they are deeply human problems, and often legitimate medical conditions. If your depression or anxiety could speak, what would it say? It is important to remember that progress out of the pit happens step-by-step, bit-by-bit. Here are practical strategies to help you find your footing:
Read and Preach the Word to Yourself: Study Psalms 42-43 and observe how the Psalmist honestly addresses God while simultaneously preaching hope to his own soul.
Act on Faith (Even When You Don't Feel Like It): Accept the challenge of faithful obedience. Make small, consistent, faith-based changes in your daily details, even if you are skeptical that anything will make a difference.
Serve Others: Jesus called us to be servants, and devoting your time and energy to someone whose circumstances are worse than your own provides renewed purpose and perspective.
Engage in Fellowship: Isolation feeds depression. Spend time with other believers; their positivity and hopefulness can be contagious and counteract your negative thoughts.
Spend Time in Nature: Disconnecting from the hustle and bustle to enjoy God's creation can dramatically change your mindset. Time outdoors provides Vitamin D and lowers cortisol (the stress hormone), elevating your mood and improving concentration.
See a Medical Professional: Do not ignore the physical body. See a doctor to rule out underlying physical causes or to seek medication, which can help correct chemical imbalances in the brain.
